Walking distances

Walking distances was created by somegirl
I have MS which causes foot drop, neuropathic pain and fatigue.

These symptoms cause me to fall. The frequency is reduced by a crutch and an ankle foot orthoses.

The shortest distance I have fallen is from my front doorstep.

Pain increases by the time I reach my road at 75m.

Fatigue means I can only walk once per day when I do go out. I stop for rests on occasion but mostly I just pause frequently.

My question is what distance do I tick in the Mobility (Moving Around) section?

I can generally walk over 200m to the nearest bus stop even with these difficulties. Does this mean I should be ticking - 12a. Can stand and then move more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided?

Thanks in advance

I cannot give you a clear yes or no in regard to this.

On one hand, you state that on a daily basis that you can walk more than 200m, this will always present problems if stated on the form.

On the other, there appears to be no consideration as to whether you can do this distance "reliably", see our PIP Claim guide for an explanation of this term.

So it could be that you cannot reliably walk the 200m but are you reliably limited to a shorter distance and is that sufficient for an award as your post suggests that you would not score for the Going Out Activity? More importantly, have you evidence to support a shorter distance?

Gordon,

Thank you for your insights.

I didn't think I would qualify for anything in that section. I was told to fill it in by my clinician.

I do have a letter explaining the shortest distances where I have regularly fallen (0-70 metres) and where the pain begins to increase (70 metres). The letter also says I am at risk of falls on every journey.

I think it unlikely you will score more than 4 points for Mobility so I would not include pages of information but it is still worth having a go for the 8 points and an award.
