Carers Allowance was created by Roch82
Hello.
My son has applied for carers allowance as he started caring for me more than my mum last year, I felt ABIT of a burden. This is the first time anyone has applied for this.
My mum works full time 4 days a week, which is why we thought we couldn't apply for it,
Even though she did a really lot for me each day.
My son was out of work since Dec 2021, so last yr he started doing more and more for me so I advised him to claim carers.
We had a letter back stating they was lead to believe he didn't finish work till Jan 2023, this confuse us. He had been trying to get his p45 since leaving the job but he never got a reply.
He finally found out the accountant that his boss used and last week finally got his P45, they told him they had to put Jan 2023 on the P45 as his employer didn't tell them until recently that he has finished working for them and they couldn't back date it. It does say he hasn't earned anything for last yr so we are confused why carers allowance didn't go on the fact he didn't have any earnings. We have now posted this to them for evidence.
On April he got the chance of some self employed work but this has been hit and miss, and he still cares for me even when he does have a day at work. We didn't want to throw him working into the mix untill we sorted the first P45 Situation out, and hopefully get some back pay.
If and when he starts working more him and my mum will be caring for me between them. Can we still claim carers if they are splitting the caring and working?
Thank you

No, only one person can be in receipt of Carers Allowance against your, what I assume is a PIP Daily Living award.
Be aware, whoever claims the CA, must be able to provide a minimum of 35 hours a week of care (on their own) and their earnings cannot exceed £139 per week after deductions.

Thank you for your response.
How should we work with the starting self employed as he's not really getting any work at the minute. Do I wait for the decision on the first instance of the claim or should I call in and tell them now?
Do they have the right to not back date any payments, if he has now started self employment?
Thanks

A CA claim can be back-dated by up to three months providing the 35 hours of care was given during this period.
If he is working, even if he is not earning then you must inform the Carers team.
