Are ESA and nsESA one and the same? was created by LittleFluffyClouds
Hello, I'm new to the forum.
I'm currently self employed, working from home. I get enhanced for both PIP components and DH gets carers allowance for me. We also get WTC to top up my income
It's becoming increasingly difficult to work and I can really only manage two or three hours a week now.

I'm very confused about the benefits system, but worked out that nsESA support group might be my best option.

However when I started to read the guides here, it doesn't talk specifically about ns, just 'ESA'; which I thought was a legacy benefit.

Before I read through more, can anyone tell me if the guide applies to people like me who would be putting in a brand new claim for nsESA? And does this mean I'm also then on UC? What are the benefits to being on both?

Also, can you work two or three hours for yourself as permitted work, or only for an employer?

Legacy ESA as it is now called is no longer available for new claims, so it would be New Style ESA that you would be applying for.

If you are self-employed then you will need two full years of Class 2 NI Contributions for the Tax Years 2020-21 and 2021-22.

You can work up to but not including 16 hours a week and earn up to £167.00 per week with Permitted Work but be aware your doing so during the claim process may be taken as proof that you are Fit for Work.

Have you looked at our ESA/UC Claim guide for the criteria that you will need to meet for an NS ESA claim? See the Guides link at the top of the page.
