Change of address query. was created by AnonymousM
Hi, I'd like some advice as I'm going to be changing address soon, and possible changing areas so may need to claim UC.

I currently rent my own home, but will be renting a room from a friend. I get ESA, HB, PIP and SDP.

Firstly, what do I have to do to change address? Can I write to them? Or do I have to call the awful PIP line and get cut off multiple times?

Secondly, will I have to get a doctor's note to claim UC? I'm already on ESA and have recently had my PIP review and been awarded it for another 3 years. So do I have to go back to my GP when I move to get a note to claim UC? Or can I use my existing claim and evidence?

Lastly, if I rent a room, will I still get the severe disability premium or the UC transitional protection? Or won't I get anything as I'm now renting a room instead of my own house?

Thanks.

Hi AnonymousM

If you change local authority area and need to claim help with your housing costs then you will have to claim UC. When you report a change of address, you can do this by phone but I would also advise you to put it in writing by confirming your telephone call and sending the letter by recorded delivery.

Some claimants who claim UC are better off than staying on legacy benefits, you can check you entitlements by using a benefit checker; gov.uk/benefits-calculators or see your locl Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk

You do not need a Dr's note before applying for UC. If you apply for UC before your IR ESA stops, you should get transferred on to the LCWRA group. If your ESA stops before you apply for UC then you will have to go through the assessment phase.
