Hi, My wife has a brain tumour and it is due to be removed any time now. After the operation it is likely that she won't be allowed to drive for a period of time, maybe up to 1 year?

My question is, will she be eligible for a free or concession bus pass or some kind of token for reduced fares via taxis?

Probably a long shot, but I thought it might be worth asking.

Thanks .

Hi onestep

Your question is outside the remit of this forum. I don't know whether your wife would be eligible for a disabled person's bus pass.

I live in London and have a taxi card. It is funded through my local authority. It is not free but the fares are certainly much cheaper than the full fare. I am allowed 90 rides a year. Some of the rides I double swipe so then of course that uses up my allowance.

You’ll have to let DVLA know. They could take the licence away, & give it back later on. I’m sure anything medical Iike this means that you could be entitled to a free pass. Check with your local authority, you can do this online. All the best to you both!

Hi

I’ve got disabled bus pass on grounds that my licence was revoked for medical reasons. So you would definitely get one if its deemed that not safe to drive. Only problem is could take a while. You have to send form to DVLA. They will probably write to GP asking them to give you a medical to confirm that you should not drive. All this will take time. If at some point you want licence back then same time consuming process.

I would write to DVLA (use form else they will just send you one anyway) and say something like you can’t clearly read number plate from 20 metres. They will probably not even bother the GP and just write to you saying licence revoked. You can then go online and apply for disabled bus pass on grounds that licence was revoked.

Have to careful though as might shoot youself in foot and find it diffficult to get licence back. If you don’t want it back then should get 5 year bus pass. Won’t renew automatically so you would have to something up to date to give to council to renew it. Could well be that your wife will have some vision impairment (wink wink!) following operation so if all cleared up after one year might be easier enough to get licence reinstated.

Not sure about taxi situation you’ll have to delve into that yourself.

Regards. Hope things go well.
