ESA to UC migration - what about DLA?

My adult son is still receiving DLA as he had an indefinite award. If/when he has to migrate to UC from ESA (support group) I’m wondering if he will still remain on DLA or whether we will need to support him to migrate from DLA to PIP. And if we do, would it be better to start that process voluntarily first?

Hi Nitoda

At one point your son will have to migrate from DLA to PIP, but it's not clear when they will restart the migration process again. Only you can decide whether or not to start the process voluntarily - but there is one thing you need to be sure of before you do.

Some claimants have been shocked when they have moved from an indefinite DLA award across to PIP to find out that they have not been awarded enhanced PIP and haven't been given an ongoing award. That's because the criteria for DLA is different from PIP and PIP is harder to get and award lengths have been shortened.

In no way am I trying to frighten you - because you may have nothing to worry about - but before you do anything, take the time to read through the Guide to PIP Claims and Reviews so you can familiarise yourself with the process. Please don't take anything for granted and assume that his current award guarantees the equivalent when they move him across to PIP. Some claimants have been fortunate - but many have not.
