Can I claim Universal Credit if I live with my parents? was created by Alison
Hi
I am 56 years of age and have been on ESA for the last 15 years or so. I have been reading the guide about migrating to UC and I now realize that this benefit can be affected by the circumstances of other members of my household.
I live with my parents. I moved back in with them when I became unwell (again, about 15 years ago). I'm in the WRAG group. I completed an ESA 50 in the first half of last year and am still waiting for a response to this. I haven't received a migration letter yet. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
My parents are both 89 this year. They both receive a state pension and a pension from my Dad's years of employment. I don't know how much they have in savings but I imagine it would take us over the £16,000 threshold.
My Mum had a stroke in June last year. I haven't looked into applying for carer's allowance. I just assumed it wouldn't be allowed if I was on ESA but, after reading the guide, i'm now wondering if this is the case?
Many thanks
Alison

Hi Alison,
You will be treated completely separately from your parents for means tested Benefits such as Universal Credit. So none of their savings or income will affect you Universal Credit. Also if they give you money occasionally to help you that won't be taken into account. Your UC claim won't affect their Benefits.
For you to be elegible for Carer's Allowance or the Carer's element of UC you need to be caring 35 hours per week for a severely disabled person. So the parent you care for would need to be in receipt of Attendance Allowance or another such disability Benefit. Maybe you could consider completing an application for Attendance Allowance for your mother.

I am going through a renewal process with UC at the moment.
I live with my parents (for the past 15 years+) and in a similar situation to you and have had no problem with ESA and UC claims in the past.
PIP scored me incorrectly which meant a tribunal was needed and I was awarded the right amount of points.
The PDF guides that are offered here really helped me with my claims.

Hi Loony
Thanks for letting me know your experience. It's good to hear that you've had no problems.
The guides are great, I agree. Don't know where I'd be without them!
