Can somebody please help clarify my understanding of these payments to replace income for inability to work as to how they affect entitlement to ESA, Tax Credits and Universal Credit.

Am I correct that:

ESA income related.
These payments are included as income.

Contribution based ESA
These payments are included as income if over 50% of the premiums were paid by the employer.
These payments are not included as income if over 50% of the premiums were paid by the individual.

Tax Credits.
Same as contribution based ESA

Universal Credit
All of such payments are considered as income, regardless of who paid the premium and will reduce any UC award by £1 for each £1.

Hi Ray

Your question is outside the remit of the forum. You do need to seek advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk, they will be able to take all your circumstances into consideration.

I would say your understanding is correct, but I am not sure about your first paragraph under Contribution based ESA. The second paragraph is correct.
