UC Migration - support group status not carried across to New-Style ESA

Hi, I started my UC migration at the beginning of January, and filled in the form myself. I also suffer from Schizophrenia and have been receiving support based ESA for the past couple of years. My condition hasn't improved in that time, and if anything has got worse over the last few years.

Anyway, I received a letter confirming that my contribution based ESA will be changing to New Style ESA from the 21st Jan. The letter also said that they'll contact me to book an appointment with a work coach (over phone or face to face). The work coach will explain what I need to do to continue to get New Style ESA, and will create a 'Claimant Commitment' with me.

However, I assumed because I was in the support group that I would be moved onto the LCWRA element on UC, and would not have to see a work coach? Is this correct, and what should I do next in this case? I see that you can ask the DWP to reconsider the decision, or go to appeal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Deckard,

Do not worry as you will be transferred in to the UC equivalent of the ESA Support Group. This is termed the UC LCWRA ( limited capability for work and work related activities ).
With UC Managed Migration Contributions based ESA automatically becomes New Style ESA which is basically the same thing ( a contributions based Benefit ). The only difference is that everyone has to agree a claimant commitment. For you being in the ESA Support Group all that means is that you agree to inform the DWP if you have a change of circumstances ( such as getting married etc ). I would definitely agree to a phone interview which should be over in 10 minutes.
If you have any queries it would be a good idea to phone the Citizens Advice Help to Claim phone number which is on page 2 of your Migration letter.

Let me know how you get on.

David
