Upcoming PIP Telephone Assessment Help Please

I received a text reminder today about a PIP assessment on 13 February. First I knew about it as have received no other intimation that I was having one. I'm undergoing a lot of medical tests at the moment both NHS and privately so next week isn't a good time for me anyway. So am going to ask for it to be rearranged.

I would like it to be recorded so will ask Capita to do this but I want to record my own copy covertly. I have a fairly old smartphone so don't know if it has voice recorder built in or if I need to get an app. Any suggestions of any good ones please? I've heard this can sometimes, rarely, make Capita change to a paper based assessment instead? Or do I need to tell them I'm recording it?

I have several new conditions or confirmations of existing ones since I filled the form in back in March 2024. Is this the time to bring them up, is it worth sending copies to Capita in the meantime or just mention them during the assessment? A lot has happened healthwise since last year.

I have photos of my actual PIP form I sent in and copious notes but these are too long winded to use, so is it a good idea to condense them into bullet points. I've never had a phone assessment before.

I'm pretty gutted really as my last 2 reviews were paper based and I was hoping this one would be too. I spent hours on the form and sent in so much information that I thought I'd done enough not to need an assessment as well. Does anyone know how long these things normally last. Thanks.

Hi killbot99

I'm sorry this has come out of the blue.

As the last two assessments were paper-based you could always ask them to change the type of assessment and do a paper-based assessment. They don't have to agree - but you are allowed to make the request, and they have to consider it. If they refuse, you can try a second time, and if they still refuse to change, you will have to take part in the telephone assessment.

I'm afraid I can't give you any advice on recording - perhaps another member will be able to tell you what they have used. Making your own recording will not make Capita change to a paper-based assessment. I do know a couple of members have told the assessors on the day that they are also doing their own recording and the assessors allowed it - but you may find that at assessor refuses to continue with the assessment and another one will be scheduled. Assessors are not legally required to be recorded which is why we suggest you do a covert recording so you have your own recording.

If you want to send in additional information you can do - but you should send it to Capita and the DWP. I can't tell you whether they will look at it before the assessment or during it - but at least it is on record.

I would look at the Guide to PIP claims and reviews. There is information on telephone assessments - so you can read the questions you could be asked. The assessment lasts from and hour to an hour and a half for most people.
