"The annual Rent-a-Room limit is £7,500. My ex partner (we are in the middle of a divorce) was paying the mortgage but has stopped, I think I may have got him to agree to paying half the mortgage again from July. I had hoped to rent a room out when I migrate to UC (from ESA) so that I could pay the other half of the mortgage but I don't quite understand if I would be entitled to the full amount or half.

Could someone tell me if - even though we are separated - the fact he is joint owner, does that mean he receives 'income' if I am using that rent money to pay half the mortgage?

If yes, then I only have £3,750 tax free and I would have to pay tax on the rest? Technically we are still married even though I have applied for divorce. Appreciate any advice.

Hi Ess

I am not qualified to give advice on matters relating to divorce or renting of property. Here is a useful guide from Citizens Advice on the subject.
