PIP - should I request re-assessment? was created by J.C.
Hi all, I'm new here and after watching the webinar about the mental health / mobility component of PIP I believe I was wrongly assessed 2 years ago when I was awarded the basic living component for 10 years. I didn't appeal because I was grateful for what I did get and besides I didn't have the knowledge (or even the confidence or energy) to appeal.
After watching the webinar I believe I should have been awarded at least basic mobility, if not enhanced.
I am now worried that I will lose the basic living award if the proposed changes come into effect as the highest single score I received was a 3.
Since then my circumstances have changed and my health has deteriorated. If I was re-assessed today I am sure the outcome would be different.
I don't know whether I should risk a reassessment or not and don't know what to do.
I'm sure there are other people in similar circumstances.
I'm losing sleep over this and my already fragile mental health is deteriorating rapidly.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Hi J.C.,
I think you will be out of date to try and ask for an appeal for your previous assessment of 2 years ago.
If you feel that your health has deteriorated you can certainly ask for a revision. It is almost certain that you will have to undertake a further assessment. I genuinely don't know the merits of keeping what benefit you have as opposed to arguing for an upgrade. Nor do I know how the proposed new benefit rules will affect benefits as there has been no further information on this.
However it is likely that having watched the webinar, and having access to the members guides on B &W you will hopefully find it easier to express the true nature of your disabilities.
It is up to you whether you ask DWP for revision or stick with what you have. Nevertheless have another read of the members guides first and be absolutely certain that despite worsening health you can actually achieve more points. For example, You can achieve 4 points for mobility by having a walking ability of 50-200m. If say your walking ability was previously maximum of 180m, and now its up to 60m, thats a big deterioration but still falls within the same points bracket.
Likewise if you struggle to cook and now use more disability gadget (aid or appliance) to help facilitate this, and they work, you still won't get further points unless you can show eg you now need physical help.
If you do choose to ask for a revision I suggest that you gather all the medical evidence you can first. Get everything ready and then approach DWP.
I hope this helps.
