PIP Reviews: Case managers extending awards

Today I received a letter awarding me PIP at the same rates from my 2022 review (Enhanced Daily Living and Mobility) for another three years.

In the narrative section under “My decision” the PIP Case Manager wrote “I decided to award you PIP for a longer time as your circumstances have changed” (I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD since my last review). But the PIP award is for another three years not longer.

In the October 2022 letter, the PIP Case Manager wrote “The information provided shows your needs have not changed and are continuing. I decided to award you PIP for a longer time.”

Is this just a template response for this section of the PIP review outcome letter or should I actually have expected my award to be extended for more than three years before my next review? Is this something to query with PIP?

Thank you

Hi Fusion77

As you know - an award of three years - means that you can get a review form any time after two years. Unfortunately, award lengths have been shortened. There is nothing to stop you from writing and saying that you are very happy with the award, but you would like them to review the award length. A couple of members have managed to get theirs extended by another couple of years.

Hi BIS

Would the letter I send PIP asking for an award length extension need to specifically reference this as a MR request or are you suggesting I can send this as an informal request? Do I need to set out my reasons in the letter (eg my conditions are chronic and have continued to affect me since first making my claim in 2017 as evidenced by this most recent review)?

Thank you

Hi Fusion77

Essentially, you're not supposed to be able to do it as an MR - but the DWP will decide whether it is or not.

Argue any way you like. The DWP is loath to give longer awards even for chronic conditions. If you can say that your condition is not likely to improve and it hasn't since you first applied then say so. But if you had your condition long before PIP existed - don't forget to say so. If your condition has worsened and is likely to deteriorate further, say so. There is no magic formula for getting them to increase the award length. It just comes down to luck.
