Receiving UC & LCWRA - will payments to pension reduce my UC? was created by graham526
Hello
I currently receive UC and LCWRA without any deductions.
On the govt website I have found that I need to inform the DWP if I am to make payments to my personal pension.
Also my pension pot may be seen as capital or savings.
From my previous post - I was under the impression that my current pension (£13K) would not be regarded as savings.
And I could confidently make monthly payments to my pension without losing any UC or LCWRA payment.
Can someone please advise where I stand?
I was considering setting up a direct debit to my pension.

Hi graham526
Your question is outside the remit of the forum.
Company/private Pensions are ignored for UC, unless they are in payment, in which case they are deducted £ for £ for UC claimants.
You need to seek specialist advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation: advicelocal.uk where they can take all your circumstances into consideration when giving you advice.

Thank you for your reply.
I have followed your advice and found a place for specialist advice from your link advicelocal.uk/ .
I phoned Birmingham City University Law Clinic (BCULC).
I spoke with an adviser who further referred to a supervisor (a bit like CAB),
After working on my case I was called 30 minutes later with an answer.
They advised they were referring to the 'Welfare Benefits Handbook 2025/26 27th Edition'.
Given it's a law place - I asked for something in writing.
Here is their email response:
The BCULC seemed fairly confident with their assessment.
Therefore I will be seeking to make pension contributions to my personal pension.
Naturally I will not 'draw' on that pension or seek a 'lump sum' from it until I am retirement age.
Thank you so much for your reply.

Paying money into a private pension does not automatically affect your Universal Credit award, including the LCWRA element. You are free to spend your money as you wish. The funds held within a pension scheme are disregarded for Universal Credit purposes. If you receive a lump sum payment or regular income from the pension fund, then that needs to be declared. The BCULC seemed fairly confident with their assessment.
