DLA is primarily awarded on your care and/or mobility needs, the nature of the medical condition(s) causing those needs is secondary.

Hi Wendy,
Despite having COPD and Epilepsy, there is no guarantee that you will receive an indefinite award of DLA. Often with first claims for DLA, even for those with chronic/incurable diseases, the Decision Maker will only make an award for a fixed term, for example 3 years, or perhaps 5 years.
I have chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, but my first claim and subsequent renewal claim were not 'indefinite', they were made for a fixed term, and it was only at my 2nd renewal, at which point I'd also been diagnosed with chronic brittle asthma and bronchiectasis, that I was given at that time a 'life award'. All life awards are now called 'indefinite awards'.
If you go to the Spotlights are of the forum and click on Medical Conditions for DLA you can check out about the care and mobility needs of your conditions by looking them up in the Disability Handbook, and the A-Z of Medical Conditions.
Both are used by DWP Decision Makers and DLA Tribunals to help them assess any mobility and/or care needs for the most common severe medical conditions, what level of award should be made, and for how long.
Hope this is of help to you.
Best wishes.
Jim
