Success with DLA first time, A Big Thank You !!

I still find it hard to believe that I have succeded in recently getting an award of Higher Rate Mobility and Care Component of DLA first time, with no medical. After years of sending for the forms and then not having the courage to complete the forms to apply for DLA, I found the help, advice and the courage that I so much needed from Benefits and Work to complete the application forms and not to feel guilt about claiming this time. It has got to have been one of the hardest and most upsetting things that I have ever done. One lives so long with ones illness and limitations that in the end, it just seems normal, until one starts analizing things on a day to day basis.
It has taken quite a few days for it all to sink in and to realise what a difference DLA will make to my life and to my wife. I can now stop worrying about all those expenses that definately make ones illness worse. Gradually it has dawned on me that we might afford a few things that could make so much difference to the depression that long term dissability causes. Perhapes a short break somewhere or a meal out, without worrying about the cost !! I might even be able to pay for some help with our jungle of a garden, or to mend our car when it needs it.
I am quite sure if I had not followed your advice and sent in such a detailed application, contrary to the advice given me from my local Citizens Advice Bureau, that I would not have had such an outcome first time. I did have the support of my own Doctor thankfully.
I just hope that things won't change too drastically for Benefits Claimants with the forthcoming changes to the Benefits system.

Well done!

I felt exactly the same as you in having to concentrate my mind on the many things that I couldn't do in order to complete the form rather than looking on the bright side of the things that I still could.

I too was awarded DLA on my first attempt but I did have a medical so you've done better than I did.

Congratulations and enjoy some of the freedoms that DLA can bring to your life.
