DLA/PIP Retirement Age Question was created by denise
I was reading through your resources for PIP and noticed that the assessments will be for working age people aged 16-64. My question is, as I am female and my retirement date is June 2013 when I will be aged 61 years and 7 months, would I be classed as still being working age or would they not reassess me as I would be retired then??

Many thanks

Hi Denise, by 'working age' the rules mean anyone who is below the state retirement age. I think you will be below this age in 2013, even if you have taken retirement? If this is the case, then you can expect to be reassessed in due course.

Sorry to correct you Mrs H :)

The cut off is a specific age and is not linked to the State Retirement Age.

So those who are under 16 and over 65 will not be re-assessed. Whether this will remain the case in the long term has not been stated.

hi thanks for the reply. just to clarify when i am 61 and 7 months months(June 2013) i will start receiving a state pension as this is my state retirement age as I am female. I worked for many years but due to disability I started receiving High rate DLA a few years ago, so I wanted to know if I would be reassessed because I won't be of working age as I will be retired.
Sorry for the confusion
Thanks

Hi Denise,

Your State Pension and DLA ( soon to be PIP) are two separate issues, so receiving State Pension from my experience doesn't trigger a review of your DLA, although new claims for DLA must be made before an applicant's 65th birthday.

However, all DLA recipients, even those with indefinite ( formerly life awards) can have their DLA reviewed under Right Payment Programme

Claimants under 65 will eventually be reassessed for PIP, but when depends on how
successful or otherwise the transition is. PIP recipients can continue to claim PIP after they reach 65.

Current DLA claimants over 65 ( e.g myself) will continue to receive DLA so long as their needs haven't changed. Full information on PIP, including a FAQ can be found on the DWP website Personal Indendepence Payment

In my opinion, replacing DLA with PIP was totally unnecessary and will make it more difficult to understand for both claimants and DWP Decision Makers.

Hope this is of some help.

Best regards.

Jim
