I sent back my ESA form and then they wrote to my GP, presumably sking for more information and verification.
It can take some weeks after they have your form before they consider approaching your GP.And they don't always ask for more information and I have heard some GP's are refusing to fill in the DWP forms.

Hi mcw,
Some G.P.'s may well be complaining regarding having to fill in DWP forms such as the ESA113, and your information may well be valid.
However, G.P.'s are contractually obliged to fill in such forms for the DWP, whereas they have no such obligation to provide letters of support etc for their patients.
