Will the situation under UC be different than it is now for people on Working Tax Credits for self-employed disabled people? I've heard that people will be expected to earn the minimum wage but where does that leave disabled people under Universal Credit who can only do a few hours a week? I would like to go self-employed but I could only manage a few hours a week because of restrictions to my health (on a good week). I will never make enough to live on under the new system (whereas under the present system the Tax Credits would really make a difference). Am I to be penalised and prevented from Self-Employment because of my disability? Isn't this discrimination under The Equality Act? After all, the Equality Act allows people to limit their hours, but they are caught in a bind if they will never make enough to be financial self-sufficient due to small number of hours worked. Will the Universal Credit provide a safety net supplement for those in this position without having to have sanctions and conditions or are they to be denied this form of work?
Many thanks.

I am sorry Asbo, but we are not dealing with Universal Credit on the forum yet, and even when we do, it may only be in connection with Income Related ESA.

I would recommend you try and get face to face advice with regard to your questions, although I suspect that many advice agencies will not yet be up to speed on UC.

I just feel I've been in limbo about this for ages and ages and it's the only work I could do. Tried asking in all sorts of places but just can't get any advice :(

I understand your frustrations, but even if the Universal Credit was not involved, we would not be able to offer you advice in regards to Self-Employment and Tax Credits.

I think it is simply too early for anyone to know how UC is going to work :(
