"Assistance", in relation to personal independence payment (PIP), has a legal definition that it is important to understand. The law states that "assistance" means: physical intervention by another person and does not include speech;

So, encouraging, calming or reassuring someone would be unlikely to count as assistance, for example.

Assistance is relevant to a number of personal independence payment activities, including:

1. Preparing food.
2. Taking nutrition.
3. Managing therapy or monitoring a health condition.
4. Washing and bathing.
5. Managing toilet needs or incontinence.
6. Dressing and undressing.
7. Communicating verbally.
10. Making budgeting decisions.
