Nickname: Foxierkid
Age: 60-64
Main health condition: Physical health
Main conditions that affect daily living: I can’t use my right arm due to the brachial and radial nerves been cut accidentally in surgery. Can’t move my fingers due to nerve damage. Have a frozen shoulder so I can’t raise my hand above my head. I can only bend my elbow to about 90 degrees and cannot touch my face with that hand , I also cannot twist at the wrist and turn my hand upwards facing the ceiling, from scar tissue after having multiple surgeries. The affects of the nerve is set for more or less the rest of my life. I’m receiving PIP basic rate of £72 a week. I’m currently on UC looking for work but can’t find anyone to take me onboard within their company as I physically only have one working hand ( you need 2 hands to do a job ) . However I do some volunteering work with charities. If my PIP payments are cut, then where is my incentive to do the volunteering work as it costs me close to £8 a day in train fare to get there. The PIP was awarded originally for the condition of my arm. 2 points for preparation of food, 2 points for eating and drinking, 2 points for washing and bathing & 2 points for dressing and undressing . A few years ago I had Surgery on my prostate which lead to been awarded 2 points toilet needs and 1 point for taking medication as I have to give myself injections once a week, which is extremely difficult as I don’t have the manual dexterity to do it myself, I pay a small fee for a nurse to come to my house and help me with the injections once a week. That treatment as well will stop if I lose my PIP. I need assistance from someone to dress myself especially clothes with buttons or tie strings or shoe laces, assistance to get out of the bath as I don’t have the coordination to grip with the right hand on the side of the bath. I can’t cook safely. I need adapters to drive as I can’t grip the steering wheel. All the above may sound trivial to some, especially those who have never experienced a disability and adapters and aids and the hiring of people like nurses and physiotherapists are expensive. More to the point when I retire I won’t be able to move over from PIP to attendance allowance.
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: I’ve been receiving pip since 2014, and when reviewed every 3 years it’s been the same outcome. So it’s very unlikely.
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Bathing, showering, dressing, cooking, cleaning, shopping, self medication, daily home set Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy, holding onto stairwells or bannisters on right side of stairs, using a can opener, putting on dressings and plasters, carrying large or heavy boxes.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: £290 every 4 weeks PIP and £535 a month approx Severe Disability Premium which is paid with my UC (Transitional Protection) as I moved over from Jobseeker’s Allowance . That’s approximately £10,770 per annum.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: The biggest obstacle I have is finding someone who would employ me with my condition as I’ve only physically got use of one working arm and hand. Some employers admit to seen my condition as a risk in concerns to health and safety.
Anything else to tell us: I’m classes as having a severe disability, I make every effort to look for employment, but after 2026 it’s looks like I may lose my entitlement for pip. I put in so much energy and effort to look for work. I’ve done everything that’s expected of me from the labour government to try and find work. However I’m labelled as a benefits scrounger and there is a strong possibility of my PIP been cut, that feels like a kick in the teeth to me.
