Nickname: 2SHEDS
Age: 67
Main health condition: Physical health
Main conditions that affect daily living: Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
COPD
DISH
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Not very likely (even though condition has got worse)
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: As I have arthritis in all/most joints (hands, knees, neck, shoulders, ankles) I am in constant pain (varying degrees depending on the day). I also have little strength in my hands/wrists.
As my knees and ankles are prone to 'giving out' at any moment, my partner needs to be at home when I shower etc in case I fall.
I have had to give up almost all cooking, washing up, housework (leaving it all to my partner) as I can't do much heavy lifting or stand at the sink for any length of time.
If, on a less bad day, I do the cooking, I will suffer for it the next day.
I can't walk very far, so I have to drive even relatively short distances. Although, this is now beginning to be an issue, as I can't sit in one position for too long, and it makes my hands/wrists hurt if too much gear changing etc.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: If I do lose the living component of PIP, it will mean my partner, as my carer, also losing her Carers Allowance, so we're going to be roughly £157pw worse off.
I don't know if my UC claim will be affected as well. I realise as CA is counted as income for UC, we may not lose the £83.90 as they currently take it off our money. But as the Government are also looking at the disability payments, I don't know if we will lose money from somewhere else.
Obviously losing this much money will be devastating. We will have to cut down on healthy food (cheap food often not as healthy), my partner will have to carry the heavy shopping more often as we won't be able to afford to drive or get taxis.
Heating our accommodation in winter will be an issue without this money.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I've reached State Pension Age, so am in receipt of my State Pension. I'm not likely to be taken on by anyone as I am too old and not reliable because of my ailments. I might be able to work for a day (or less), but not the next day. Not sure any prospective employer would agree to me having days off all the time, or going home early!
As I was a general builder, there is no way I could go back into the building game and I'm far too old to be retrained to do something else. Office work is out as I can't sit for a long time, wouldn't be able to click on a mouse/use keyboard all day. Retail work would mean standing for long periods, so not an option. Factory work is also not an option, as there is normally too much repetitive work which will effect my joints and be extremely painful after a short while.
Anything else to tell us: In Dec 2021, my PIP was awarded for 10 years, taking me past state pension age (SPA). I was under the impression this automatically changed to a life time award once I reached SPA. I don't really want to ask DWP about it for fear of them reviewing the claim and taking money off me, or force me onto Attendance Allowance which again would mean a drop in money as no mobility component in AA.
I don't really know if these proposed changes will effect me because theoretically, I'm not due a review. But, who knows?
