I would just like to share a recent event that happened to a very close and dear friend of mine. She has been a full time carer to her disabled husband for many years, but on Tuesday evening this last week, he sadly and unexpectedly passed away. Within 24 hours she notified the necessary departments and was told that all her husbands benefits would stop immediately. Yesterday, still in the midst of turmoil and not having slept since the trauma of Tuesday evening, she contacted the Benefits Agency to request help of a grant for the funeral expenses, only to be told that she had no right to claim help unless she give details of her income. She told the adviser that she had no income at present as her husband had died less than 48 hours previously. The young man told her that she had to go into her local jobcentre and apply for JSA because she is of working age and has no reason not to be available for work, and would not receive any monetary help until she did so. He showed her no sympathy, let alone empathy, no respect or regard for her situation although she was obviously still under stress from her ordeal and very much suffering with bereavement. All she could think about was how she could afford to give her much loved husband a decent funeral with all the respect he deserved. This young man (adviser) didn't even offer any condolences, he wasn't interested in her situation and was most abrupt with my friend's appeal for help.

I am so horrified at what some people in this country call fair and humane. Compassion used to be a basic quality, I think we are now dealing with heartless robots.

Unfortunately there are good and bad people at the DWP.

However, whilst their approach was obviously unsympathetic, they may still have been providing relevant information, see the eligibility criteria on the following.
