Hello. My original ESA claim was contribution based as I was receiving sick pay. After appeal i was put in the support group and have remained there. I retired on ill health 2 years ago and now receive a small pension and as this is taken into account ( even for contribution based ESA) my payments are reduced accordingly. It has occurred to me that I would now be better off being on income related esa as although I would receive the same payments I would be eligible for other benefits such as help with council tax. I don't want to trigger a reassessment as it took enough stress to go through the appeal process to get in the support group - is there any way of just 'switching over' ?

Thanks

I'm afraid ESA does not work like this, if entitled, Contribution Based ESA is always paid, some people in these circumstances may be entitled to an Income Related ESA payment in addition to this, but if your pension payment is reducing your ESA(CB) then I would not expect you to entitled to this extra payment as it would be deducted £ for £ from any ESA(IR).

You can put your details into one of the online benefit calculators to confirm this. See
