My wife has had a letter, telling her she has to attend a medical for P.I.P. next week. Will i be able to go into the medical with her, as i am here husband and carer? She has rheumatoid arthritis, along with a long list of other medical conditions. Will i be able to speak for her in the medical? will i be able to take paperwork into the medical with me? Will i be able to refer to my notes and answer questions about my wife's illness and her care needs?.. i look forward to hearing from you
You will be allowed to accompany your wife for her assessment. The assessor will want to hear from your wife as to how her problems affect her. You should be allowed to prompt or add a short explanation but be careful not to 'take over'.
You can take paperwork in with you but please be careful. There is an assumption that claimants know how they are without having to refer to notes and that anyone who does so might be trying to 'cheat'. So you should explain why your wife cannot speak for herself (if this is the case) and why notes might be needed.
Our PIP guide explains what to expect on the day. Don't forget that the assessment, in effect, starts when the claimant leaves their home and continues until clear of the assessment centre afterwards.
