PIP and assisstance dogs? was created by buster21
Hi Gordon,
wondered if you could help. You may recall, my daughter is blind and receives PIP. My query is as follows:

If someone was awarded 12 points for planning and following journeys (f) because that blind person needs and gets help from another person, will it make any difference at all if they were to be given a guide dog? The idea being that the guide dog might substitute another person on some occasions.

In other words, would a blind person actually be worse off under PIP if given and using a guide dog instead of another person?

Please forgive me if the answer seems obvious - but it's one of those which after reading the descriptor several times, it becomes more and more confusing. Many thanks.

So Descriptor (f) refers to a familiar journey, so will the provision of a guide dog mean that she can follow the route of a familiar journey or not, if she can then this would be an improvement in her limitations that she would need to inform the DWP of.

Understand that following the route is not just about getting from a to b, it is about the process of doing this, so would she be able to handle any diversions in the route that were necessary. what if she has to cross a road and the traffic lights are out of order. In other words having a dog does not mean that she can go to a familiar place of necessity.

Thank you for your answer Gordon. I'm still a little confused - please bare with me.

The descriptor reads, "cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid."

Does this not mean, although a person can follow the route of a familiar journey, but only with the help of another person or assistance dog, then they should satisfy the descriptor? - because they cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person or assistance dog but can with another person or assistance dog. Sorry to be a pain Gordon.

If they cannot follow the familiar journey even with the assistance of another person or assistance dog then they score the points.

If they can follow the route with another person or a dog then they don't
