can you get pip for severe eczema was created by Nina
Hi, my 16 years old child has severe eczema. I have to help him with applying the emollients
both day and night.
I was told by a friend I can apply for pip for him.
Can you please tell me if I can apply for pip for severe eczema.

Thanks

Hi Tina77

There is nothing to stop you applying for PIP. The best thing you can do is look through the PIP guide and see whether his condition prevents him from carrying out the tasks as set out in the PIP criteria and whether you think there is the potential for him to earn enough points to get an award. This is something only you can decide as you know how it affects him and what support he needs.

Tina: PIP is awarded on the basis of how and to what degree the condition(s) cause given impairment/disability - not on the condition itself. If you are reasonably needed to help your son with his treatment, and the result of not helping him would be deterioration of his condition, that is a sound basis to apply.

So he won't qualify for PIP just for having the skin condition; it's how that skin condition impacts upon his activities of daily living (and mobility, if relevant). Needing help with the administration of medication/treatment is ONE criterion for the award of points, but is not sufficient in itself to score sufficient points for an award. If his condition is relevant to other award criteria ALSO, he may score sufficient points.

So it's worth considering a claim, and if you think he could score sufficient points you've nothing to lose applying (just the tedium of completing the form!)
