ESA and Retirement was created by Ray
Hello to all
I'm hoping someone can help me with this and I'll keep it as brief as possible.
I have reached 65 years old this year, I was on ESA for a good while it has now ceased due to my age. I was receiving housing benefits that have been canceled as well due to the change in circumstances. Today after a long drawn out phone process to the DWP I'm told i will be getting £674. 40 a month single person pension and was unlikely to be given pension credits. (yet to try).
However i was on ESA for disabilities comprising of panic attacks and severe osteoarthritis in several places. What i am asking as i got little help from the DWP is am i entitled to claim another benefit as about from reaching 65 nothing has changed health-wise. My full rent exceeds the pension money anyway.
Hoping to sort this out inside a month due to council going back to charging me full rent.
Can anyone help me or have had the same experience and tell me what i need to do pleas?
Regards Ray

You may still be entitled to Housing Benefit although the amount you receive may be reduced due to your Pension, contact your Local Authority to see.

The ESA was paid as it was determined that you were Unfit for Work, you are now receiving the pension as a replacement for the ESA as you have reached an age where you are no longer expected to work.

If you have reached State Retirement Age then the only other benefit you can claim in regard to your limitations is Attendance Allowance which is paid to help with the additional costs that can result from a disability. See

www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance or long term illness.

Hi Ray

Your state pension will be paid every 4 weeks which works out at £168.60 pw. At present you will not be eligible to claim pension credit, for a single person basic pension credits start at £167.25 per week. What this means is if your state pension was below £167.25 per week then you would be eligible to claim PC, unfortunately your state pension is just above the threshold.

As Gordon has stated below if you are eligible to claim Attendane Allowance this would give an additional premium £65.85 against PC, raising your PC ceiling to £233.35 pw, as £233.35 is greater than your state pension you would get paid the difference £64.75 pension credit pw.

PC is a qualifying benefit and therefore you would be entitled to full HB and warm home discount if your utility company offers this towards your electric bill.

I will read up on the attendance allowance, being just over PC limit by £1 seems almost designed
Oh well, I will push on as I'm sure not getting better.
Thanks again for making things clearer Gordon.

Hi Ray

Have a look at our latest Attendance Allowance guide. This guide is for you if you are over State Pension age and considering making a claim for Attendance Allowance (AA) because of a physical or mental health condition.
