I thought I had submitted this question, but it has not appeared, so I apologise if I did something wrong or if this is a repeat.

When a claimant who is a single person, who is in receipt of Severe Disability Premium, who is in the support group and also who receives PIP, has one child who usually lives with them, who leaves home and goes to university, does that claimant stop getting Severe Disability Premium? Thank you.

Now to answer your question:

You cannot get SDP if you have anyone living with you who is classed as a non-dependant eg an adult son or daughter, friend or relative. Any one under the age of 18 is not classed as a non-dependant.
When you talk about the child going to university, if that person no longer resides with the single person because they live elsewhere, they cannot count as a non-dependant. If that person comes home every semesta then they may be classed as a non dependant.

Dear Gary

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I will seek further advice about this because my child will come home and stay during all university holidays, so it is still not at all clear to me whether this will be viewed by the DWP as me living with another adult. If this is the case, it is morally corrupt.

This “adult” will depend on me entirely for food / shelter / warmth etc etc for many months of each year. The student loan is not even enough to eke out a meagre existence on during term time. I think I am looking quite possibly at some painful and difficult poverty for the years ahead if they remove SDP from me. No wonder kids from disadvantaged backgrounds shy away from realising their potential by enrolling in university if they and their (disabled) families end up having to go cold in winter and possibly have to turn to food banks.

On the assumption that the child will not be at your home during term time then you may be able to claim the SDP, I have also heard of someone who was able to claim it Monday to Friday during term time but it is entirely up to a DWP DM.

Dear Gordon, thank you so much. I hope you are well. I will try and find a welfare rights representative to help me on this and I will let you know the outcome in September. P x
