DVLA - Confused about 50% reduction was created by LinW13
Hello All,

I followed the advice on the DVLA website and sent the following paperwork to Swansea by post.

DWP letter confirming my PIP rate (Standard).
Form V10 and my V5C log book.
My MOT and insurance cover note.
Cheque for 50% of the road tax.

They kept the V10 but sent everything else back including the cheque. Their letter said "Your query is being dealt with". I had expected to have my log book updated with the new taxation class. But apart from stamping all my paperwork, nothing had changed.

So what happens next ? Does anybody know about this ?

My road tax runs out at the end of October, so this is not exactly urgent - yet.

I reckon I'm not the only one with this situation, so I thought I would ask you all for your advice before I try to phone the DVLA.

Thanks for reading this. Good luck and stay safe.

Hi LinW

Your question is outside the remit of this forum, there may be some members on the forum who maybe able to help through personal experience. The following website may be able to give you some information www.gov.uk/financial-help-disabled/vehicles-and-transport

i do my car tax every year via online it only takes about 5 mins. but if it is your first time to get disabled tax or change your vehicle you have to take all your documents to the post office , they will do it all for you. good luck

My husband renewed car tax whilst I was waiting for MR result (used to be DLA high mobility; changed to standard PIP. He just did it and paid nothing, assuming he'd be charged if necessary. So not sure what's going on there, myself. ? Possible bad communications.

Toadlet, I think it would be down to yourselves to inform DVLA that you are now on 50% reduction as they won't know and as you hadn't received your MR result your husband would have been using the DLA qualifying paperwork. That will be the reason you haven't paid anything. I am now in the same boat so will have to go through this procedure.
What I am unsure about is, when you get free road tax the vehicle has to be used either by or for the disabled person, however when you are only getting 50% of the road tax and paying 50%, do the same rules apply or can husband use the vehicle for his personal use? We have 2 cars at present, one on full road tax and one on free (which will be half once sorted) but what happens when we go down to 1 car, does this rule apply.

Hi furry

It is not a subject area where I have much knowledge, the following website may be useful www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-tax-exemption-disability and the links on the web site will give you more information.
