Hi,

I'm supporting a student who is considering taking a break from studies. Student Finance England (SFE) would no longer consider them a student so would stop funding but the DWP would still consider them a full-time student so they wouldn't be able to claim benefits.

However, the student is not well enough to work. I can find some information that suggests that they could claim benefits if they are taking a break due to ill-health but it's not very clear on whether they would qualify for ESA/UC. She is planning on apply for PIP.

I would be grateful if you could advise on what would be available to them.

Many thanks,
Kim

The only benefit available will be Universal Credit, as a full time student but she may be barred but she should still attempt a claim.

A claim for New Style ESA will require her to have worked in the last two full Tax Years.

Thanks for your reply. I shall advise her to apply for UC. She has worked over the past 2 years so she may have enough contributions to apply for ESA too.
