Nerve Pain - Post Inguinal Hernia repair

Hi All, For the last 9 years now I have been suffering from Inguinal nerve pain, this follows a hernia repair operation 9 years ago. I went from not being believed and being told the pain would go away with time to having a Spinal Cord Implant two years ago and a daily cocktail of drugs.
I also ended up having to leave my job as I could not sit, stand, bend or walk for very long or the drugs made it impossible to concentrate.

I filled in the BIS PIP checker and I hardly hit any points. This may be due to not applying my symptoms correctly. This problem I see is that it does not really say that you can walk 20m but the whole time in pain.

Has anyone experience of Inguinal nerve pain and if applying for PIP how should I express my situation.

Many thanks

Hi Simon
Don't get fixated on the PIP checker. It can be a useful tool, but it does have its limitations.

You need to show when answering the question what impact it has on your daily living and mobility.

So with regard to the walking. What impact does the pain have - do you have to stop - how many times would you have to stop, how severe is the pain eg does it make you catch your breath - how would you feel at the end of the walk, would you need to immediately have to sit down? What impact does all that medication have on you? Do you walk more slowly than someone who doesn't have the condition? Do you walk alone? If you have poor concentration are you safe to walk alone? ....You need to assume when writing that the person reading it has no knowledge of you or the impact of your condition. People often say 'the assessor should know ' - but they might not know anything - so you need to explain always making sure that you are covering the criteria that are laid down. So look at each question carefully and answer it as well as you can. You may think you have already mentioned something - but if something applies to question 3 and the same applies for question 10 - repeat it! Getting assessors to understand the impact of pain - whatever the specific condition is always a challenge - so you need to be as clear as you can.

Thank you for your reply.

I have applied today again for pip. I did not fill in the last form as I couldnt express how pain affects me to coincide with the questions they ask. My disability is not that a part of me does not work , I have full range of motion. but that motion or any movement increases pain levels. It still does not mean I can not move at all. I can move but with severe pain. I know wording is very important in these forms but it seems that they have no room for someone who is not expressing their condition. eg I can move around the house. I can move around the house but standing making a cup of tea is agony, walking up stairs feels like I have been branded in the groin area, need to sit down in the shower as its very painful standing more that 5 minutes in the one spot. So you see I can move around the house. So do they think it is acceptable for someone to move around the house in that much pain that they require strong pain killers every day just to get through the day a little more comfortable. The pain is always there but I can move. So does this rule me out of PiP. It does not seem reasonable .

Kind regards

Hi Simon

Being in severe pain, but being able to move around does not rule a person out of getting PIP.

Hello Simon. I am not a moderator but picked up on one thing you said. You need to sit down to shower, I assume you have a shower seat then. You should score 2 points for having to use an aid to wash or shower. Have you grab handles to help you stand safely in the shower. Think about other aids you use or could use that would make life easier. Do you use aids for the toilet, ie grab handles or raised toilet seat, If so, that is another 2 points. Do you have to use aids in the kitchen, perhaps a perching stool or does someone help you physically. Can you dress or do you use aids to help you, ie long handled shoe horn. You need to think how difficult and painful your everyday living is. Just be honest, don't exagerate, just say it how it is. Good luck.
