DLA to PIP Evidence was created by ravenmiss
Hi all,

My son turned 16 this year so has been invited to apply for PIP and my main concern is about evidence.

He has autism and was diagnosed 11 years ago. Aside from a few years of social support group meetings, some yearly paediatrician appts and speech therapy he's had no other contact with the NHS.

I'm extremely experienced with children and adults with ASD (non-professional) so have been able to manage things myself along with his stepdad who is also ASD so helps loads.

He has EHCPs which for the past few years have said he's barely got issues at school (he finds it ok to focus during a set routine). He started college last month.

My concern is that I pretty much have NO medical evidence aside from an 11-year-old diagnosis letter. Does anyone know who would be good at helping support us with some evidence? Or should just filling in the PIP2 and a copy of the diagnosis be ok?

Has anyone been in this situation? Who did you ask for help?

(Sorry if this was posted twice, the site constantly logs me out).

Hi Wockie

I have family members with autism and I would use every bit of information you have - however old it is, because it's generally greatly misunderstood as you well know. You make sure you write a supporting statement detailing all your experience and how autism affects your son against the PIP criteria from your point of view. Assume the person reading the form knows nothing!

Hi BIS, I'll include everything I can find although his last 3 or 4 EHCPs make him sound like he hasn't got any issues with anything so I doubt they will be useful. I have a ton of paperwork from around the time he was diagnosed so shall see what I can include :D

I'll deffo do a statement, along with his stepdad :)

Hi wockle

As BIS has previously stated send in what supporting documents you have, if they are old, explain why they are still relevant, don't forget to include any repeat prescriptions and support letters from those giving support on a regular basis.

Make sure that you understand the criteria that your family member is being assessed against, you can put the best case forward that is possible but you won't score points if you do not meet the PIP Descriptors. Check out our PIP guides: www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip for help in completing the form.
