UC to ESA? was created by Ping12
Hi,
I am currently claiming Universal Credit and have a history of anxiety and depression, which has recently been exasperated by current circumstances. I am finding it increasingly difficult to meet my obligations in terms of job searches etc. and the threat of sanctions is making my situation worse.
I have been advised that as I am receiving UC that I now cannot make a claim for ESA, but I feel if my situation worsens, I will not be able to continue on UC. So are there any other options available for me, that will allow time for me to address my health issues?
Cheers.

Hi Stevie
You have a number of options but it all depends on your circumstances. You need to get advice from a local welfare rights worker, who will be able to give you accurate advice.
1 - You may be able to claim PIP, we do have a PIP self test calculator to give you a guide to see whether or not you may be eligible: www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-indep...nt-pip/pip-self-test
2 - You need to get your doctor to give you a "fit note", once you get this, you need to send it to your work coach who should then issue you with a UC50 form which you will have to complete, we do have a very good guide to help you.
3 - Providing you have at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions in both of the Tax Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 then you can make a claim for New Style ESA, this is a Contribution Based benefit so your household income, with the exception of any pension income you receive, is disregarded as are your assets and savings.
If you do not have enough contributions you may still be eligible to claim LCW/LCWRA.
