My daughter is in receipt of PIP daily care component and I am thinking of stopping work in order to care for her. I have a small eBay business (more of a hobby really) that I will continue to run.

Carers' Allowance is only paid if the claimant earns £128 per week after tax, expenses and NICs. But how is this administered by the DWP? Say I earn £200 per week takings, but £100 per week of that is postage, materials and eBay fees. How is that accounted for by DWP? Is it taken from my tax return at the end of the tax year, which gives the complete picture of my profits and losses?

Hi Drax

To claim Carer's Allowance, anyone would be eligible if they:

a) ~ spend at least 35 hours a week caring for a disabled person (you don't have to live with them or be related to them)
b) ~ care for someone who receives the higher-rate or middle-rate care component of Disability Living Allowance, either rate of Personal Independence Payment daily living component, or any rate of Attendance Allowance
c) ~ do not earn more than £128 a week (after deductions)
d) ~ are not in full-time education

If you have any questions/queries in regards to claiming CA then I would contact CA Unit: 0800 731 0297 who will be able to give you advice that is tailored to your situation.

If eligible, you can choose to be paid weekly in advance or every 4 weeks.

Hi IDS

No, you are incorrect, you do not loose any PIP. Claiming CA for someone in receipt of IR ESA will affect their premium (SDP), if they receive it, which can then also have knock on effects.

There are two sets of requirements for the Severe Disability Premium.

First, to be eligible for the Premium, you need to be receiving a qualifying benefit such as the PIP Daily award that you have just received (there are others) you lived alone or were considered to be living alone and no one receives Carers Allowance against your PIP award or as a couple you can qualify if both you and your partner get a qualifying benefit (PIP daily living).

Secondly, to be entitled to payment of the Premium you need to be receiving an Income Related benefit such as ESA(IR), Income Support or Pension Credit but not Universal Credit.
