Would Wife's UC claim effect my Contributory ESA? was created by neildry9
Hi,
I am receiving Contributory ESA in the Support Group and have been since 2010 for 10 years or so.
I am also receiving PIP at the Daily Living Standard Rate (although being Reviewed at the moment).
My Wife is not on any benefits at the moment, but has now been made Redundant after having been on Furlough for 8 Months
She is applying for Universal Credit, which means it has to be a joint application with myself as well, which seems to be the rule!
It is my wife that will be needing to claim UC because of her redundancy. She is not ill, just out of work and also we privately rent our home, so would claim for help with the rent within the UC claim as well.
Because it would have to be a joint applicant, I am worried it may put my long term claim of Contributory ESA Support Group in jeopardy or they cancel it altogether? Would I have to this ESA payment cancelled and have to go through the whole process of claiming ESA from scratch all over again? Would they (DWP) cancel my ESA once I start filling in my part of the online Universal Credit claim?
I do not want to go for the New style ESA, but would I be made to, as part of my wife's Universal Credit Claim?
I could do without the trauma of having to reclaim the ESA, I have just gone through that with PIP!
For reference I am on the Standard Living Rate of PIP as well.
Apologies for the length of the query.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Neildry9
You have already asked this question, my advice is for you and your wife to make an appointment with your local welfare rights worker where they can take all your circumstances into consideration.
Unfortunately we cannot give you advice as we do not know your circumstances and your wife's for instance, your wife my be entitled to claim 'New Style JSA' but as you have previously stated she will need to claim UC to enable her to claim the housing element, but to claim UC your income will be taken into account as UC is a means tested benefit.
