Is it possible to receive 'mutual' carers' allowan was created by King_Drax_I
My daughter gets PIP at the higher rates in each part, so she's on the maximum. I live with, and care for, my daughter, and there is no-one else in the house with us.
I have too high an income from other means to be able to get Carers' Allowance for her PIP, but I am on 'Carers' Credit' so I get my National Insurance stamp paid. In addition to her PIP, my daughter gets about £110 per month from a survivor's pension from her late mother's pension scheme.
I have just received notification that I too am going to receive PIP for the daily living part.
Can my daughter therefore claim Carers' Allowance for caring for me? In other words, can we be 'mutual carers' even though we are both on PIP?
And are there any risks? For example, in our case, I do all the practical stuff and push my daughter's wheelchair, but she provides essential emotional support to me despite being disabled; I would express this as saying that we are co-dependent. But could the DWP assume that because she is caring for me, that this means she should not herself be entitled to PIP?
I hope this makes sense! Thanks in advance

Hi Drax
You can only claim CA if :
1) Your daughter spends at least 35 hours a week caring for you,
2) You receive a qualifying benefit; DLA care middle or high, AA, PIP daily living, constant attendance allowance, armed forces independence payment
3) Age of 16 or over
4)| Not earning over £128 per week
5) Not subject to immigration control
www.gov.uk/carers-allowance
If your daughter receives IR ESA then she maybe able to claim SDP now that you are inreceipt of PIP daily living component.
You can check by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators.

Hi Gary, thanks for that. She would qualify because she fits all those criteria.
However, my main question is this: would the fact that she cares for me mean that her own PIP claim would be at risk, because the DWP might unjustly think that if she is capable of caring for someone, then she is not disabled enough to warrant having PIP?. Even though the care that she gives me does not clash with her disability? In other words, could she lose her PIP or be forced into a reassessment because she is caring for me 35+ hours per week?

Hi Drax
That is the 6 million dollar question and only you can answer it. What you need to do is look at where she scored points and if it would conflict with CA.
Have a look at our guides, I do know claimants who get both, so it is not impossible you just have to be careful with what you say as it can be taken negatively.
Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet.

If you have any further questions, then please return to the forum.

Hi Drax,
Legally if you fulfil the criteria as set out by Gary you can both claim Carer’s Allowance. I am aware of several cases where DWP have incorrectly revised PIP on the basis "if you can look after another, you should be able to look after yourself " - If DWP take this stance, they might also suggest an overpayment has therefore occurred.
Think very carefully about claiming mutual carer's allowance. You may wish to get some detailed advice from eg CAB or local advice centre.
Hope this helps.
