Hi Inspector Lewis

I can understand your worries about the bike in terms of the DWP. We had several members find that they were penalised because it was taken that their mobility had improved. I would just say to be very clear about how often you use the bike, how much effort it may take you to use it, the reliability and safety issues surrounding it and your reasons for doing so. Do not leave them the opportunity to misinterpret what you are saying. Denby is also right that the form talks about 'walking' distance not riding a bike.

Hi Inspector Lewis,

I have also met a case where a gentleman successfully convinced the DM that he could reliably ride his bike, but they argued that it could be used as an aid.

I used to ride a bicycle until my balance deteriorated and I moved on to a tricycle with an electric option, helps with the hills and when you get tired and you can get good ones on ebay. That kept me going for a bit longer but unfortunately I've had to move on from there now to a scooter.

Not sure how the DWP would see the two wheeler, i was always concerned that I might be penalized for being able to ride it and felt more comfortable when I moved to riding the three wheeler electric.

In my experience, the DWP is not interested in how you keep strong but would use it against you. As Catherine says, it can be argued that it's an aid. :(

I was fortunate enough to have received an electric bike for my birthday from my partner. I can recommend them! I sit upright like Mary Poppins going up hills at 12 mph with no effort whatsoever! It has helped my disabilities no end as I feel inclusive now on a bike ride!
