Hi
My son has received his 2nd PIP award review.
His last review in 2017 he was awarded lower rate daily living (reduced from high) and high rate mobility.

Since his last review he has married, had a child and separated. His child lives with the mother and he has access 2 nights a week.

Do we need to say all this on the review or just answer the questions on the form?

He has had CBT with one agency and his wife and child are mentioned on the report. Will it seem strange if he doesn't mention anything about them?

He has also been attending appointments at his local hospital, mental health services. They added his name to a waiting list for more therapy.

During 2020 because of covid restrictions he has had one phone appointment, one face to face, and probably 2 or 3 crisis team appointments. They prescribed a new medication and subsequently increased the dose. He was still waiting for therapy.

When he called them last week he was told he had been discharged because "he didn't respond to letters". He now has to ask his doctor to refer him again.

Do we mention this on the form?
Thanks

Hi Elie,

Thank you for your post.

There are several posts on the forum about DWP's opinion about 'no treatment' and/or 'no medication' - it often seems that DWP believe that if someone takes no medication, or only a small dose, or receives no active treatment then they have no disability. Of course this is not true, but I think it is important for you to stress that your son was receiving treatment, but since Covid this has all but disappeared.

You don't say whether you think it is correct that your son has failed to respond to letters. (Perhaps they never arrived, perhaps he did ignore them?) Again, this may be evidence of his disability, does he need prompting to read for example? If there was a mix up in the post, (not your son's fault) then simply say he is awaiting further treatment, which is perfectly true.

Clearly a lot has happened to your son in the last few years, I suspect that this sort of upheaval would be difficult for anyone, but certainly could aggravate mental health problems. Have a think about how this has affected your son. Maybe he needs more help now (perhaps because he always received help from his wife?) PIP points are awarded for the amount of help required - disabled people living on their own may muddle through alone, but this does not mean they do not need help, such as prompting or physical assistance to perform daily living or even mobility tasks. If the break up has aggravated your son's symptoms then mention this, and give examples. Otherwise it isn't necessary to write it down. That said, it is something that will almost certainly be asked if your son has to attend an assessment.
The Members Guides provide lots of helpful hints about filling claim forms or review forms.

I hope that your son finally gets the treatment he needs. In the meantime good luck with the PIP review.

Hi
Thank you for your reply.

My son takes numerous meds for his condition which has certainly gotten worse since his marriage/breakup.

It is strange about the missing letters he definitely did not receive any. In fact he had an appointment with the MH team in January this year which the hospital phoned and cancelled but could not give a reason why,so it seems strange for them to discharge him shortly afterwards.

Anyway I will say he is awaiting further treatment.

Thanks for your help

Hi
I am in the process of completing my son's 2nd PIP review. Could you help with the following section please.

Section 9 Engaging With Others Face to Face

On my son's first review on 2nd May 2017 he was awarded 2 points for this activity.
In 2016/2017 he was seeing a councellor at Mind and this was mentioned in the assessors report.

I have read on the forum that the DWP are reviewing awards for this activity because some were awarded incorrectly.

Should I add, on his new PIP review, that he was seeing a councellor in 2016/2017 and that I believe he should have been awarded 4 points at that time?

Or should I just add the help he has had from CBT and the help he is still receiving from the local mental health unit since his last review and wait until the DWP have reviewed cases going back to 2016?

The extra 2 points would have given him the enhanced rate for Daily Living in 2017.

Although I am adding lots of information from the past 4 years I am trying to avoid my son having another assessment by not making the form too long and complicated but not sure if this is the right way to go. My notes for the review are at 10 pages (some are only partial pages).

Are the decision makers who receive these reviews able to change the award (up or down) without an assessment from Capita?

Thank you.

Hi elie

This activity considers a claimant’s ability to engage with other people, which means to interact face-to-face in a contextually and socially appropriate manner, understand body language and establish relationships.

Activities 7 and 9 are not mutually exclusive. If claimants require support to engage with others under activity 9, as well as communication support under activity 7, then their needs must be considered under both activities.

There is no harm in mentioning that your son was seeing a councellor in 2016/17 and believe he should have been awarded 4 points but also mention the help he is receiving CBT and the help he is still receiving from the local mental health unit since his last review.

You to can write a supporting letter as to what support you give your son and why you give the support?

I would not worry about making the form too long, you need to make sure you cover all the bases, ideally you are aiming for a paper review so the more information you can give the better with supporting documents, if he has a CPN then a supporting letter from a CPN would be ideal, I have always found them very good.

Make sure that each page has your son's full name and NIN at the top and that they are numbered, we recommend "page X of Y" so that it is easy to see if pages are missing. Make sure you clearly mark on the form where your answers are and on the relevant page that you are answering question X.

If you have any further questions please come back to the forum.
