From Carer to needing care was created by Orange
I retired early due to ill health and to look after my disabled wife. I have claimed carers allowance for the last few years. However my own health has been deteriorating and we are now needing help from family for both of us.
How do I apply for Pip in this circumstance? Do I say I am not able to provide care and lose careers allowance straightaway with the possibility of not getting any PIP payment in place?
Or should I just continue with the claim and if successful then acknowledge and lose carers allowance? I reach state retirement age in December so think I need to apply prior to that and lose Carers allowance anyway. We basically help each other where can and rely on family for the rest. They work full time so struggle and can’t claim any allowance. I just feel if I can claim for my own problems we would be able to pay someone to help out and take the burden off our family. Really not sure what to do.

Hi Les
Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is.
Welcome to Benefits and Work .
I know many claimants who claim Carers Allowance and PIP at the same time. If you are a carer who has care needs, you can claim PIP for yourself and this will not affect your Carer’s Allowance providing you are doing at least 35 hours a week caring.
The care you provide can be supervision as well as assistance, so it may be perfectly possible to be a carer alongside having your own health difficulties.
You can claim both at the same time as long as they dont contradict, there are many people who co-exist, caring for each other, one having strengths where the other has weaknesses.
Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet. www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip
and PIP self - test PIP self test
If you have any further questions, then please return to the forum.

Hi Les,
Just wanting to add to Gary's responce that I would advise you to make it clear when you apply what the care is that you provide, and why this does not mean that you yourself may not also need help. It could be that your areas of difficulties are very different to your wife's or as Gary suggests your support is encouraging or supervising.
However obvious this may be to you, don't assume that the assessor and decision maker will find it equally as obvious.
Wishing you success
Catherine
