Strange letter regarding my esa. Please help. was created by phrank
Hi there,
Ive just had a letter from the DWP informing me about the new ESA rate from April.
The strange thing is that it says that from - the date is actually my 66th birthday next year - my ESA will be then be £114.10 a week and then says 'this is because of an age change'??
That is when I will get my first state pension from.
Surely this must be a mistake or do they pay any sort of premiums or anything once you reach state pension age?
I hope someone can give me an explanation.
Kind regards,
Phrank

Hi phrank
When you reach State Pension age your ESA will cease, you may be entitled to claim Pension Credit www.gov.uk/pension-credit depending on your circumstances.
Doing a quick calculation from the figure you gave I an guessing that you are in the support group.
Do you receive any PIP? you can check you benefit entitlements by putting your details in an online calculator: gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Thanks for the reply, Gary,
Yes I am in the support group and I receive the lower daily living and higher mobility components of PIP.
I'm quite intrigued about what your reply may be.
Kind regards,
Phrank.

Hi phrank
The reason for my question, if you get the daily living component of PIP then when you reach State Pension age depending on your circumstances you may be eligible to apply for Pension Credits and get an additional premium (SDP).
As you are not in receipt of additional disability premiums with your ESA then I have assumed your are in receipt of Contribution Based ESA.

Thanks, Gary,
Just to clarifly: I am in receipt of income based ESA and get the severe disability payment at the moment. Does this mean this will cease when I reach state pension age?
Where do I stand here?
I look forward to your reply and thanks in advance for looking into this for me,
Kind regards,
Phrank.

Hi phrank
The answer to your question is ... Yes and No
Let me clarify my answer, when you reach state pension age your ESA will stop and any disability premiums will also stop.
If you are eligible to apply for Pension Credit then you will also be eligible for the SDP as you can get an SDP paid with PC. This is one reason why you should apply for PC before you retire if you are eligible: www.gov.uk/pension-credit.
If you receive an EDP then this will cease when you reach state pension age.
