PIP Can I tick aids if rest for prep/cook Food was created by VIA
Hello Fellow forum members and moderators,
I have to send my PIP.1043 review form this saturday.
Checking my pip form from 3 years ago I can see I ticked Yes to ‘Do you need an aid or appliance to prepare or cook a simple meal because I had followed the advice of an association online that said that we should probably tick yes if we needed to sit down while preparing or cooking - a stool or similar counts as an aid or if we take rest breaks while preparing and cooking.
I had also said I needed help from another person.
Do you believe I did the wrong thing if I do not use aids at all.
I used to sit at the table on a chair 3 years back to prepare the food (peeling etc) and take rest breaks because I had problems with standing while cooking, walking one metre or 2 and even sitting. Now I cannot sit at a chair because of a catching in my hip so I have food delivered I do not cook.
May I ask if it is wrong to tick yes if the aid is only a normal chair (not a high perched stool by the cooker which for me is too dangerous anyway) at a table and yes because of rest breaks.
Maybe that is why I was given 2 points for aids only.
But I thought also that if I did not tick aids and they did not give me 8 points because i needed someone to prepare and cook food for me, at least I would get 2 points for aids rather than zero points.
What does one think, maybe?|
MANY THANKS
Best wishes

Hi Olympia,
If you were using a chair to help you whilst you cooked, I would have said lick the box. But your reality is that you don’t use one, so I would suggest not ticking it.
Ticking it to say that you use an aid to cook, means that you are saying that you do cook. This is at best a misleading message, and one that I think is likely to back fire on you.
What would be more helpful is to write something like, ‘on a good day I used to be able to use a chair to help me prepare and cook food. Unfortunately my condition has deteriorated so that this is no longer possible’.
Just make sure that you also cover whether or not you can use a microwave to reheat meals.

Also because there are different aids, it is useful to explain what you have tried and can’t get on with, for example a ring pull adapter to open cans still needs a degree of force to operate these successfully. If the strength in your hands/fingers is effected, then this may still be difficult to achieve. I found that if no aids are mentioned then it is assumed you can cope with any aid available. It helps to paint a better picture of what difficulties you have, even with aids .....
