says i may need bank statements and details of any
savings

private pensions
earnings
property and immigration status

worrying me to death ,minds racing and i feel sick , cant stop shaking ,had to get my son to post this for me ,so would be grateful for any advise or explanation as to what this is about or entails

Hello bonniedog,

The DWP do carry out checks to check that people are receiving the correct benefits, but there are also people out there who impersonate the DWP to get you to reveal personal data. It is very easy to use a computer to create a letter which looks as if it comes from the DWP and to buy a pack of brown envelopes.

What concerns me most about your post is that they do not include your NI number. That sounds most unlike the DWP! It should be on the top left hand corner of the first page of the letter.

I would suggest that you ring the DWP on a number on the top of one of your other benefit letters and ask them for confirmation or otherwise as to whether or not the letter is genuine. It may be best if you and your son make this call together. Do not use any phone number provided on the complaince letter.

Until you have that confirmation you should not reveal any details to anyone who merely says that they are from the DWP and knows your name and address. Remember that even the DWP are not entitled to ask you for passwords and/or PIN numbers!

I would be grateful if you come back to us and let us know what you discover, since this may help others.

Thank you
Catherine

hi and thank you for taking the time to come to my aid ,im very greatful

i thought it was odd there was no ni number ,there definitely isn't one ,

and no reference to my benefit category

the paper its printed on is very thin and flimsy ,and they didnt include a not sure what its called but its multi language sheet with the same information in different langues ,which seems to be standard these days

the envelope looks official and is printed second class royal mail and has the belfast return address on the flap

but ill contact them in the morning or get my wife to and find out if its genuine and report back here post haste

thank you again

on hearing of your reply my son compared my last letter from dwp ,extending my pip to this one

and noted that as well as no ni number it has a reference number listed under their telephone numbers on the right of the page that's comprised of 11 number and a hyphen
my pip letter also has he called it a qwerty code on the first page almost centre top

the compliance one does not have this

again thanks and ill report back after ive checked it out with the dwp

okay so i rang the phone number from a previous letter dated 29th jan of this year ,answered the automated choice confirm a appointment ,was put through to a message saying the department was closed due to covid ,08001690310

my son also noticed there are two phone numbers on the compliance letter one is a local number area coded direct line to compliance officer and a 0800 number ,the local number is oddly formated in number groups of four then three and then four ,not dialing code and phone number as you would usually see it written down

the letter is also addressed to me but omits my middle initial maybe nothing but thought it worth mentioning ,

any ideas could the oddities in the letter be due to someone working from home due to covid or would that not make a difference regarding ni number ect

any ideas how i can speak to someone

thanks again for any assistance you can give me

Hi bonniedog

Use one of the numbers from the government website. If there is an option for confirming an appointment - don't use it. You need to be able to speak to someone.
