PIP report frustration was created by Sarah-Lee
Hi everyone

I had my telephone assessment last week which I was so anxious about. I felt totally drained afterwards and had to go to bed. I have MS and anxiety. I requested my report and received it this morning.
I’m now sat here in tears. It looks like I am going to be awarded 2 points. That’s it. I used the guides here and filled in so much Information and explained every detail.
I’m going to appeal when I get the letter saying I’m not entitled to anything. I feel like I’ve been told I’m just lazy avd not worthy of anything.

Hi Sarah-Lee

Don't give up hope, there is a small window for you to write to the Decision Maker but you will need to be quick. Go through the assessors report with a highlighter and highlight anything that is wrong or not stated at the assessment or even missing information.

Understand that the assessor is offering an opinion when they say that you can do the PIP activities, tackling these head-on is unlikely to be successful, you need to show that the basis of that opinion is founded on incorrect information, so try and refer to your evidence to undermine what they have said.

Also, try and stick to issues that lead to your scoring points, I often hear members referring to the assessors spelling, as an example, whilst it may show a lack of professionalism, raising it as an issue isn't going to help you get an award.

Lastly, make sure that you understand the criteria that you are being assessed against you can put the best case forward that is possible but you won't score points if you do not meet the PIP Descriptors.

Make sure that your letter makes it clear that you are not requesting a Mandatory Reconsideration but you reserve the right to do so once a Decision has been made.

It's impossible to say how "small" the time to write to the Decision Maker is, some members have reported Decisions in weeks for others it has been months.

Hi Sarah-Lee, " just lazy and not worthy of anything " is the Assessor, NOT YOU! Well maybe not lazy but driven by a government agenda that is certainly unworthy. Just to back up all Gary's excellent advice, it is worth writing that icy cold letter taking the report apart ASAP.
For each descriptor where they have not recommended what you know is the right level/ignored/twisted whatever, refer them to your supporting evidence with page number, paragraph etc.
Things like 'her pain relief is moderate' if it is not, you can refer to pages of the NHS website if helpful as extra evidence.
I want to really encourage you:- I did this for our daughter and she got Enhanced on both, which the report certainly was not indicating. And it was the first time of 3 I had done this [mega thanks B&W!] and the first time we had not had to struggle through MR and Tribunal for the same result. So incredibly worthwhile IMHO.
Willing you strength, Denby

Thank you! I’ve felt so down today but I’m going to write a letter tomorrow. Did you highlight the parts in the report that were wrong and then write notes explaining why it’s wrong? Some basic things like the fact I have handrails in my bathroom were completely ignored and it was ticked that I could get in and out myself.
Thank you for the encouragement.

Hi Sarah-Lee

Yes write notes explaining why it is wrong but make sure that you understand the criteria that you are being assessed against when you are explaining why the assessment report is wrong such as handrails in your bathroom and the difficulties you may have in using them.

If you use any aids explain why you use them and any difficulties you have in using them. Do you have help in getting in and out of a bath/shower, do you use a bath board in a bath or a stool in the shower, if you do explain why, do you need help to use them, again explain why.

..and never be ashamed to admit, if this is the true situation, that for example, [like our daughter] you simply do not shower or bath for weeks on end because it is too exhausting/help is not available. [She has bought water-free shampoo and I believe body-"wash" to help keep fresh without.] Or anything else basically humiliating, don't hold back the truth to spare their blushes, they'll live!
