Hello
I have my PIP telephone assessment tomorrow. I have never had one before as it is a new PIP claim. I am terrified.

One thing I would like to clarify is will they ask me outright about the variability of my condition, ie how many good or bad days etc? Or do they relate the variability to each specific descriptor? I’m stressing because my condition fluctuates.

Also do they ask you to describe a typical day? If so how in depth does this have to be?

Any advice on the questions they are likely to ask would be much appreciated. Do they ask about each specific descriptor in turn or do they ask sneaky questions so they can apply them to a descriptor?

Sorry for all these questions. I’ve never done this before and feel like I’m going into the Lions den.

I’m scared if I’m too prepared it will go against me but if I’m not prepared it will go against me as well. I’m not very good on the telephone at the best of times!

Thank you

Hi Karen,
I think the answer to all your questions is yes!
It rather depends in the assessor, some are understanding and ask appropriate questions in a genuine attempt to get the proper information, others seem to ask rather random questions. Most will tend to ask about your typical day.
Firstly try not to overthink this. You really can't second guess these things.
Have your claim form in front of you. If you can get a friend or relative to make notes. Unless you absolutely need to, don't take any extra meds, as it will give a false impression of you not being in pain etc.
Remember that even if your condition is variable it may not make a difference PIP is awarded on the basis of problems with the activities on the majority of days
The easiest example is with epilepsy. You might argue the need for supervision, even though fits don't happen often. However since you can't plan for the fits, you need supervision all the time and certainly on the majority of days Likewise, even if you have a better day ( note better rather than good!) You might decide to go fir a longer walk, ie over the 200m points limit. However, you still may have balance issues and risk falling, you may still be too slow,
All activities also have to be done safely, to an acceptable standard, within twice a reasonable time and repeatedly across the day. All 4 criteria apply, so, although your condition varies in intensity, it is entirely possible that this won't actually matter or be relevant for PiP.
You might wish to make a few notes to use diluting the assessment Having a coffee in glass of water to hand may also help. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Go to the loo beforehand!
If you feel you can't continue at any point say so, the assessor should allow a break. If you need to end the assessment just say so.
Major things to be aware of.

Driving. The assessor may assume because you drive you can grip knives and have enough brain power to remember to take pills!
Explain all the help you need. Try not to mention housework as if you can do this assessor will also assume you can do other activities. Help to do housework doesn't comprise part of PIp and so will also lead you down a false alley.
Most important advice. It isn't about getting PIP at all costs Be yourself, be natural and just say it how it is. Don't be embarrassed. Dont play down the difficulties you have Explain explain explain. And hopefully, the assessor will actually listen!
Hopefully this will help.Good luck .

...and PS don't forget to ask for the copy of the report in 2 or 3 day's time. This is PA4 form.
