PIP for depression

PIP for depression was created by Cabby
I suffer from depression and possibly PTSD (although this has never been diagnosed by a Health Professional) which started when I was 12 years old following a violent rape by 3 individuals. I come across as well balanced, articulate and well educated but behind this facade is my alter ego - traumatised, fearful, angry, suicidal at times and more. I completed the PIP form last year and had a telephone assessment in June this year. I have now received the decision and I was not awarded PIP. In fact I scored extremely low on the whole claim form. In the words of the assessor "Whilst a diagnosed mental health condition is acknowledged, you do not have any specialist input from the mental health team and there is no evidence of overwhelming psychological distress"
How can a person who has never met me decide that I have no overwhelming psychological distress?
Would there be any point in asking for a mandatory reconsideration?

Hello Carole,

Yes, there is every point in asking for a Mandatory Reconsideration.

Many people are scored down because they are not currently receiving specialised medical input. There can be a number of reasons for this such as treatment has not restarted after covid, on waiting list or treatment was received and made no significant improvement. The reason you are not receiving such treatment may be one of those reasons, or something else, do say in your MR why this is.

As to the evidence of overwhelming psychological distress, if you can include any additional third-party evidence of this in your submission do so. You might also want to include a PIP diary which would show the impact of OPD on your daily life. After that all you can do is refute the statement that you don’t suffer from OPD and give examples under each of the activities where this is a problem.

PIP resources gives you information about PIP Diaries, scroll down to the second section on that page; and Mandatory Reconsiderations, scroll down to just below the image of Mark and Liam.

I hope that helps, and please do be encouraged, lots of people initially get low scores and then go on to get their correct award.

Dear Carole, so sorry you have got such an unreasonable first decision. Please do try the diary mentioned in Catherine's excellent reply, the assessors seem to place more weight on them than you might think. I personally would think that writing it day by day may itself bring back the trauma and the misery of it's effects on your life now. I think that recording this in itself will add to the diary being very genuinely convincing. Please try to find some support as you attempt this, from perhaps rape survivor telephone help or some such - you don't want to be pushed to the edge too far in your preparation for your MR. Remember, you should try to get the basic request in before the month [from the date of their letter, not when you got it ] is up - but you can say in it that you will be submitting further evidence. Then send in eg the diary following beyond the month.
My very best wishes,
Denby

Hi Carole,

Reading Denby's post above made me think that it might be worth you keeping a second diary, but just for yourself. In it record the things you have acheived, the happy times, anything which has made you feel good. This will not help your PIP claim, and you should not submit it to the DWP, but it should help paint a more balanced picture for your own mental health.

Thank you all for your encouragement. I have decided to ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration and have spent the last few days drafting that with the help of this website and the information contained therein. I also found a letter from a company called IESO Digital Health to my GP that I reached out to after my last suicide attempt. I had contacted them with regards to a CBT course that I saw advertised. Their reply states that the course is too brief for the trauma that I suffer and they suggested a rape counselling service which includes historic rape. Additionally they indicate my PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores. Not only that, they also state that during the telephone conversation they had with me, that I felt suicidal and likely to hurt myself in some way on more than half of the days which I understand to be a key factor. I am in the process of contacting them. I have also started a PIP Diary, 2 of them, as I thought your suggestion, Catherine, will help me look to positive experiences. I have also stated in my letter that I will be sending a completed diary of my day-to-day issues.
I am overwhelmed by your support and kindness.

Thank you Catherine.
Please could you explain OPD. As I have rarely been to a GP about my condition, I have no idea of what some of the abbreviations you use signify..
