Universal Credit payment changes. was created by coolhand
Hi. Is Universal Credit paid in arrears?
I thought I knew that it was until recently asking to receive payments every two weeks. I got a message in my journal agreeing the new payments. The new schedule was to start on the 18th August when I would normally have expected to receive payment for the previous month. I expected to receive payment up-to the 18th and then every 2 weeks from then but I actually received 2 weeks payment on the 18th. I’m now confused and concerned.

Hello Luke and welcome to the forum.

That does not sound right to me. I agree with you, based on what you say, I would have expected you to receive 4 weeks on the 18th and then 2 weeks on the 1st Sept and every fortnight after that.

I would recommend that you double check that you did not receive payment on the 4th, and if not, put something in your journal. You should not lose money by being paid fortnightly.

Hi Luke

You will usually receive your first payment 7 days after the end of your first assessment period. Universal Credit will then be paid on the same date each month. Your normal pay day will be fixed at 7 days after the end of your assessment period.

New Style ESA is a fortnightly payment that can be claimed on its own or at the same time as Universal Credit (UC).

Unless you have asked for split payments, if you have not applied for NS ESA then I would contact DWP via your journal to find out what is happening or contact UC helpline 0800 328 5644 / 9344 / 5646

Hi Gary. Mine is an existing claim already being paid and I asked for the payments to be changed from monthly to 2 weekly.

Hi Luke

They are called alternate payments, these are only considered if it is considered that you genuinely cannot manage with the usual way of payment and as a result there would be risk of financial harm to you and your family.

Alternative payments are designed to be time limited, with support put in place to help you transfer to monthly budgeting.

If you are refused alternative payments, there is no right of appeal but you can ask the DWP to look at the decision again.
