Question re PIP - Planning & Following Journeys

Hi,

I need advice concerning PIP, Planning and Following Journeys.

Because of FMS, I have the following symptoms and difficulties but don't know if the DWP would consider them irrelevant to the activity?

1. Constant pain which is distracting and makes it hard to concentrate on planning or following a route.

2. Severe fatigue which makes me too tired to plan routes.

3. Visual abnormalities, including sporadic blurred vision and nystagmus etc which make it difficult to use maps and timetables etc.

Which, if any, might the DWP consider relevant?

Any info or suggestions massively appreciated!

Hi Faith,
All of these things could be relevant, however, I think the main problem you will have is whether all these things occur for the majority of days?
Questions you might also want to consider is whether your disabilities means that it takes longer than twice that of a non disabled person?
Can you plan or follow journeys safely? You say you have visual disturbances, do you perhaps need to be accompanied in order to be safe?
Maybe fatigue means that you can't you can't actually walk far or repeatedly?
Think about the all the ways that your disabilities affect you, you may have additional arguments that arise from the same disabilities, if these cause you difficulties in performing the descriptor activities.
Have a look at the members guides if you haven't done so already, as this will give you further information about all these topics.
I hope this helps.

Hello LL26,

Thank you ever so much for your detailed and helpful reply! :)

Yes, the pain and fatigue cause massive problems with walking but I thought that, for Planning & Following Journeys, the DWP does not want to hear about physical problems with mobility?

Hi Faith

The Going Out activity looks at three things.

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. You are being asked about the problems you would have with working out how to get from one place to another, you do not need to be able to follow the route that you are planning.

Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stop you doing this. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.

Following a route - This activity about the problems you would have navigating a route. So are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent you from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if you cannot undertake a journey then you will not score points for following one and vice versa.

If you say your walking is restricted, you would need to be unable to reliably walk for more than 50m to score sufficient points for an award just on the Moving Around activity. Follow LL26 advice, I would add everything that restricts your movement such as pain, fatigue.

You are not required to walk pain free but any pain that restricts the distance that you can walk should be taken into account.

Specifically for the Moving Around activity, if you are able to walk but in severe pain when doing so, then you can argue that your walking is not to a necessary standard and should be disregarded.

The legal test requires you to stand and then move (walk), so if you have problems getting up then you should argue these as well.

Good luck

Gary
