I had a DWP compliance interview. They said that they have information that I have received 100's of thousand pounds into a bank account of mine, but this account does not exist. They accept that this could be a glitch in their system, but they still want me to produce evidence that this account does not exist. I can only prove which accounts I have. Also the bank will not say which accounts I don't have. Does this make sense?

So I need to write to them with all my statements for the last 3 years, which I have. All is in order. But I still can not prove that this account does not exist.

Any advice on what I should write to them would be helpful. As anyone else had an experience of being accused of having non-existing bank accounts?

This is causing me so much stress and I have gone back into a deep mental health crisis again as a result.

Thank you all in advance

Hi Andymit

I'm sorry, but your question is outside the scope of this forum. I don't know whether any other member has been in a similar position and could say what they did.

I know you said the bank won't confirm that you are not the owner of this account - but if you haven't already - write a formal letter to the bank requesting them to provide a statement confirming that you don't hold the account in question. Make sure to keep a copy of this letter and any reply you receive for your records.

If the bank refuses or is unable to help, you can make a complaint through the bank's official complaints process - I'm not saying it will get you anywhere, but it may be worth a try. After that, you could try the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) and see if they can help. (This is long-winded, and you may not want to go this far).

You could try getting in touch with your MP, who may try and intervene on your behalf.

We experienced this although they didn't say we had thousands of pounds in an account we had hidden from them simply that we had an account we hadn't declared. Like you they wouldn't give any details of the account they believed we had simply wanted us to prove that we didn't have other accounts. They too asked for years of bank statements that were all unsuspicious and yet still they wanted details of this "other account"
The mystery was finally solved though they had seen payments being made between our account and one other. Nothing suspicious it was the account of our adult son living away from home and the money sent was often for football tickets that he had purchased and we had paid him for husband's ticket and very occasionally he would send money for some shopping I had ordered on my home delivery. It amounted to less than £200 per year.
Had they given us the bank account number we could have explained straight away and we only managed to figure it out when they eventually told us the bank that they believed the account was held at.
