Telephone appointment arrives what to do to prepare was created by Chocolady
Ive got the dreaded telephone assessment through after waiting for ages. Just wondered what to do to prepare for it. I dont have anyone to sit with me. Will that be an issue? The appointment is between 9 and 12 when I have said that it takes me until lunchtime to properly mobilise after my usual broken nights sleep, knee and back pain etc. Should I ask them to make the appointment time later? I dont think I will be able to answer properly if Im distracted by pain etc. Will this mean they will put it off until weeks later? Can I ask them to record the appointment? Is that a good idea? I know there are guides about the telephone assessment process but wondered if anyone whos been through it has further help. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Chocolady
Looking at your previous posts, i have assumed you are talking about a WCA appointment.
If you have a look at our ESA guide at the link below you will see that there are a number of pages which include advice on telephone assessments. Yes, a lot of the questions are those that would have been asked if you had a face to face assessment.
help-for-claimants/esa1
- Write yourself a bullet point list of any particular points you want to get over, so you have it by you during the assessment, tick them as you cover them during the assessment.
- have paper and pens to hand to make any notes such as the assessors name, date, time
- make sure you are seated in a comfortable chair, you are going to be there a while and at table to make notes
- if you can't hear or understand what is being asked then ask them to repeat the question
- don’t let the assessor rush you and get you flustered.
- don't forget to have a glass of water if needed so you don't get a dry throat and lose your voice!
Don’t forget to contact DWP once you receive your decision letter and ask for a copy of the assessors report called a UC85.
You can legally record a telephone call without informing the other party providing the recording is being made for your personal use. In fact, do not tell the assessor that they are being recorded as they will likely terminate the assessment.
Good luck
Gary

Thanks Gary. Some great points I will do that. They’ve given me a 9 to 12 slot when I told them I take a long time to mobilise and get sorted in the morning. Should I call and ask them for an afternoon slot or just battle through.

Hi Chocolady,
I think it's down to your own personal choice if you feel like you'd like to hear the call again after it's finished. I don't suppose it can do any harm, but that's just my opinion.
Regards, Chris.
